THE COURSE A four-session course to discover ceramics through the most direct and natural way of working with clay: your hands. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience, the course will help you build solid foundations, develop your handbuilding skills and become more confident working with clay. Classes are kept intentionally small, with 2 to a maximum of 4 participants, so that everyone can work at their own pace and receive individual guidance throughout the course. You will learn about different types of clay and explore the three fundamental handbuilding techniques — pinching, slab building and coiling — using them to create functional or decorative pieces. No previous experience is required. I will guide you step by step, while leaving plenty of room for experimentation, creativity and your own way of working. Most importantly, not everyone has to make the same objects. BRING YOUR OWN IDEAS The course provides a solid technical foundation, but the programme is not rigid. If you already have something you would like to make, bring your idea with you — a photograph, sketch, reference image, object that inspires you, or simply an idea you would like to explore. Together, we will consider how to make it, which clay to choose and which technique will work best, adapting the exercises whenever possible to your interests and project. The aim is not for everyone to create the same pieces, but to give you the skills and confidence to turn your own ideas into clay. AFTER THE COURSE After the four lessons, your pieces will remain in the studio and I will take care of the finishing process. Once completely dry, they will be bisque fired at 950°C, glazed with a transparent glaze or another glaze of your choice from those available in the studio, and then fired again at 1230°C. Your finished pieces will be ready for collection from the studio by appointment approximately one month later. From clay in your hands to a finished ceramic piece, you will have experienced the complete ceramic process. STUDIO CARE Taking care of the tools and workspace is part of the ceramic practice. At the end of each lesson, we will set aside a little time to clean the tools and tidy our workspaces, leaving the studio ready for the next session.
